Kid’s Room Storage Made Easy

There’s no two ways around it without a kids room storage
system, your kid’s room is going to be messy.
When it comes to storage for kids many parents are at a loss as to
which kinds of kid’s organizers they should purchase. It’s
understandable as there are so many different kids of organizational
tools on the market. And while we may be enticed by color, style or
pattern of trendy kid’s storage bins and built-in organizers we have to
think function first and decor second.
You see, the difference between an organized and disorganized kid’s room is simply whether the kid’s room storage system you’ve selected addresses your child’s needs and takes into account his or her individual organizing style.
The problem is kid’s rooms are often small and lack the built-in
storage that is vital for a good organizational system. Yet kid’s rooms
are often the home base for a ton of stuff from out-of-season and
outgrown clothes to surplus toys and miscellaneous overflow.
Organizing a kid’s room should not feel like losing battle – one step
forward and two steps back. For every kid’s bedroom storage dilemma
there’s also good kids storage solutions that will make organizing your
child’s bedroom so much easier.
Step back from the situation and you’ll realize that while your child’s bedroom may not be your ‘picture’ of perfection, it is her room – not yours. As a parent try to be objective and help find kid’s room storage solutions that will not only help keep your child better organized but will work with her personality and lifestyle in such away that she can take greater ownership in how her room is maintained. Less nagging and more positive encouragement is always a win, win.
Observe your child’s bedroom environment and really look at
how she uses her space. What are the main problems and what are the
possible kid’s storage solutions?
Would your child prefer more open or closed storage? Try to visualize
your child using her space in a way that reflects her personality. Aim
for kid’s room storage ideas that meet her individual needs like her
passion for bedtime reading or her zest for dramatic play. Consider
installing a new overhead reading light and making space for more books
in her nightstand. Or, you many want to create a dress-up area and
curtain off part of her closet for dramatic performances.
Instead of taking charge of the process, assist your child in deciding how she wants to use her bedroom space. Analyze the kid’s room storage problems which are contributing to her lack of order. It’s also important that any kid’s room storage ideas you
implement are categorized in such a way that it makes sense to her.
Whether its clothing, accessories, books or toys – things need to
stored in such a way that they can be easily taken out and put away. If
your child is old enough work together as a team to set up a kid’s room
storage system which meets her particular needs as well as any color
and storage for kids preferences she may have. For instance, some kids
like being able to quickly toss things into kid’s storage bins while
others like storage boxes with lids or like to house collections of
things in see-thru containers.
Just sitting and talking with your child about what’s working

Some of my favorite storage for kids and kid’s organizers include:
- Using bed risers and under-the-bed
storage bins on wheels.
- Hanging bicycle baskets on walls for added kid’s room storage.
- Nestling toys in tiered vegetable baskets that hang from a hook.
- Giving small collections of items a home in the pockets of an over-the-door hanging shoe bag.
- Installing around-the-room hooks for hanging dance outfits, shoes, sports jerseys, ball caps etc.
- Adding more adjustable shelving that can be altered as children grow.
So the bottom line is to come up with a kid’s room storage system that works for your child, not against her. The best kid’s bedroom storage idea I can suggest is one that comes from your child herself or from you after observing how she uses her room.
If your child likes having everything out in the open where she can see it, consider kid’s storage bins that are part of the room decor. If she prefers everything neat, tidy, and hidden think closed storage. In other words, shelving vs. dresser drawers and wall hooks vs. hanging clothes in a closet.
